- Your brochures
and the website say that you do not accept green and blue
glass. Yet there are bins in your lot marked “green glass”. If
you don’t accept it, why are the bins there?
Answer: Even though we do not accept green and blue glass, we
find it in our bins, anyway. Especially green glass. So we
provided bins in the hopes that those who leave these items will
place them in that bin to keep us from having to sort them out
of the clear and brown.
We are having difficulty in finding a good market for any kind
of glass, so there may also be times when we are not accepting
glass of any kind.
- What kind of
plastic do you accept?
Answer: We accept all kinds of plastic, regardless of the
number on the bottom of each item, except for plastic bags and
Styrofoam. At the present time we know of no one in our
area who accepts
Styrofoam. Plastic shopping bags may be taken to Wal-Mart; they
have a box in their lobby for collection. We very much
appreciate it when those who bring their recyclables in plastic
bags dump the contents of the bag into the bin and take the bags
back home (except in the case of shredded paper, which should
remain in the bag).
- Is it OK to
bring items for the Thrift Shop when I bring my recyclables?
Answer: Yes, IF you will be there between 9am and 4pm,
Monday through Saturday. You may back your vehicle in at
the gate on the north side of the parking lot. Someone will come
out and help you unload. Smaller items may be taken into
the Thrift Shop. Items for the Thrift Shop should never be
placed in recycling bins or at the gate. Please do not
leave items for the Thrift Shop when we are closed. The
monitors on our security system cannot differentiate between
valid donations and dumping, so the police may be called.
Anything that is of any value is usually stolen before
EmployAbility personnel come in on the following work day.
- Is there any kind
of cardboard you cannot accept?
Answer: Yes. Cardboard that is soiled with grease, food, mud
or other materials cannot be recycled and may be hazardous to
our handlers.
- Is it OK to take
items out of the recycling bins, such as a book that looks
interesting or a plastic tub?
Answer: No. Just as you would not think it was OK
for us to remove something from your front porch that was left
for you. Anything that is left in the
EmployAbility parking lot becomes the property of EmployAbility.
When you remove items without express permission, you are
stealing.
- I have trouble
navigating in your phone tree. What is the best way to get
a message to Recycling?
Answer: When calling on the phone, use extension 37.
You can enter the numbers as soon as the recording begins.
To reach Patrick Ford, the Recycling supervisor, use extension
25. You may send an e-mail to Patrick. His e-mail
address begins with pford and ends with @employabilityok.com.
Be sure to include the "ok".
- What kind of
paper can I put in the bin marked "office paper"?
Answer: Stationery and photocopy paper of all kinds,
whether printed on in black or in color; junk mail, including
window envelopes; colored paper. Please do not leave
anything in this bin that contains your personal information.
Although we are doing everything we can to curb looting, we do
find an occasional individual inside this bin with a flashlight.
The Shred Service can destroy your personal documents for you,
for a small fee. Anything made of
cardboard or pasteboard should be placed in the cardboard bins
and not in the Office Paper bin.
- I have some china
and table glassware that I want to dispose of. Can I put it in the glass bin?
Answer: No, it is not recyclable. Our glass
recycling is actually limited to clear and brown bottles,
jugs or jars. (Clear means also not "tinted" with any
color). Anything else just adds to our dumping expenses.
However, if your china and glassware are
not broken or chipped, you could take them to the Thrift Shop.
Please don't leave light bulbs, sheets of glass, window glass,
glass bricks, mirrors or auto windshields. These items
pose a hazard to our employees and increase our dumping costs.
- What kind of
metals do you recycle?
Answer: Only aluminum soft drink and beer cans.
- I was in your
dumpster the other night and someone came over a loud speaker
and asked me to leave. What's up with that?
Answer: Due to excessive problems with previously unknown
persons dumping large household items in our lot that are
unsuitable for sale in the Thrift Shop, we were
forced to begin camera surveillance. After viewing the
videos for a few weeks, we discovered we also have problems with
people stealing recyclable materials, rummaging through and
stealing Thrift Shop donations left at the gate, and climbing
into our dumpsters and scattering our trash all over the lot.
By the nature of our occupation, we operate "on a shoestring".
Surely then, you will understand how severely any activity such
as looting, dumping and dumpster diving increases our expenses
and decreases our income. With our surveillance system, we can watch, record
and capture pictures of people who use our parking lot as a
free dumping ground, or who steal. We are capable
of "seeing" all over the parking lot. We have zoom and pan
capabilities. If someone has done you the courtesy of
asking you to leave, it is
because they have identified you as someone looting or dumping,
and you should appreciate the 'heads up'. The
alternative is having the police called into the parking lot.
- Anything else I
need to know?
Answer: Yes. Please remove bottle caps and lids from
plastic and glass bottles and jars and discard
them. Please rinse clean those things that you bring that
have contained food or caustics.
And if you bring your recyclables in plastic bags, please dump
out the contents of the bag into the appropriate bins and do not
leave the bags (except in the case of shredded paper). And please know, as negative as some of
the answers provided here may sound, we do appreciate your
support very much.
