Individual Board Member Responsibilities

  1. Attend board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events.

  2. Be informed about the organization's mission and vision, services, policies and programs.

  3. Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.

  4. Serve on committees or task forces and offer to take on special assignments.

  5. Make a personal financial contribution to the organization.

  6. Inform others about the organization.

  7. Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and the organization.

  8. Keep up-to-date on developments in the organization's field.

  9. Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.

  10. Refrain from making special requests of the staff.

  11. Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing the organization's annual financial statements.

 

Ideal Personal Characteristics for EmployAbility Board Members

  1. The ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people individually and in a group.

  2. A willingness to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, ask questions, take responsibility and follow through on a given assignment, contribute personal and financial resources in a generous way according to circumstances, open doors in the community, evaluate oneself.

  3. An openness to develop board member skills such as how to cultivate and solicit funds, cultivation and recruitment of board members and other volunteers, the ability to read and understand financial statements, learning more about the substantive program areas of the organization.

  4. Possession of honesty, sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills, personal integrity, a developed sense of values, concern for the development of the nonprofit, and a sense of humor.
